We were approached by the client to design rear extension in the sunny south east back garden of a Victorian mid-terrace private property in Sandymount.
The design features a contemporary double height extension with family room at garden level and a floating steel and timber staircase that leads to the dining area at first floor.
The stair and mezzanine balustrade are simple glazed panels, that create an effect of continuity in the view from the existing house without being interrupted by handrails or spindles.
The new structure is a zinc-clad mix of two storey and single storey with the double height glazed area facing the garden. The curtain wall match perfectly the colour of the zinc, to have the illusion of an organic transition between cladding and glazing.
Hidden automatic roller shutters guarantee privacy and shadowing to the owners.
The result is a bright and proportionate addition to the original Victorian house, enhancing its elegance without competing with it.
